POST-INDEPENDENCE
atin American nations achieved independence in the 1820s. The modern era
has been marked by an active quest to define and establish individual national
identities as well as to explore a shared continental identity. Many Latin
American artists have been at the forefront of social and political change.
They have absorbed and transformed international currents in art to create
compelling expressions of the Latin American reality. They have drawn, as
well, from the indigenous and mestizo roots of their cultures to express
universal concerns.
